NFC Forum's Roadmap will change Marketing forever

  • Joe Guevara

The NFC Forum's recent unveiling of its Technology Roadmap marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

This comprehensive roadmap, developed collaboratively by leading Forum members like Rehash Digital, outlines key initiatives and research efforts through 2028, offering valuable insights into the future direction of NF. It highlights implications for businesses and marketers alike and the potential of an exciting world when frictionless experiences alongside mass adoption of NFC engagements with all modern smartphones will become the norm (with a market estimate of 2 Billion Users by 2026)!

For marketers, this means an enormous opportunity to increase engagement, create innovative and frictionless experiences, and with Rehash Connect Adaptix, an ability to integrate physical experiences and actions as part of your digital marketing ecosystem alongside data, analytics, UTM and Retargeting capabilities even in physical space.

At the heart of the roadmap are five key innovation priorities that promise to reshape the landscape of NFC technology and unlock new opportunities for businesses and marketers over the next few years:

1) Increased Power for NFC Wireless Charging

The NFC Forum plans to enhance NFC Wireless Charging capabilities by increasing power from the current 1 watt to up to 3 watts. This advancement will pave the way for wireless power and charging in new and smaller form factors, disrupting industrial design and opening doors to new market opportunities.

2) Increased NFC Range

One of the most anticipated changes (and the one my clients and I are most excited for) outlined in the roadmap is the examination of NFC connections with ranges four to six times the current operating distance.

Even a modest increase in range will enable faster and easier contactless transactions and actions, improving usability and enhancing the overall customer experience. Going from 5mm today, it will make secure point to point communication & actions with NFC absolutely simple & consistent.

3) Multiple Purpose NFC Tap

The close second most exciting innovation we're looking to develop into Adaptix is the introduction of Multiple Purpose Tap feature; which will revolutionize the contactless user experience by supporting several actions with a single tap.

From point-to-point receipt delivery to loyalty identification and total-journey ticketing, this feature will streamline interactions and drive efficiency across various use cases and expand the feasibility of enterprise (and day-to-day) NFC use cases.

4) Modernizing Device-to-Device Communication

The roadmap also includes plans to empower NFC-enabled smartphones with Point-of-Sale functionality (SoftPOS), enabling businesses and individuals to accept payments anywhere.

This modernization of device-to-device communication will unlock new opportunities for mobile payments and enhance convenience for consumers and businesses alike. With the recent DoJ Anti-Trust lawsuit of Apple's monopoly of core technology (such as NFC-Enabled Apple Pay), this will enable a much more robust ecosystem of integrated & seamless experiences across all devices in the future regardless of how the lawsuit plays out.

5) Expanding NFC’s Ability to Share Data Formats for Sustainability

Finally, Ii line with evolving consumer demands and regulatory requirements, the roadmap aims to expand NFC's ability to share data on product composition and recycling information. This initiative will contribute to a healthier circulatory economy and empower consumers to make more sustainable choices.

The implications of these advancements are far-reaching, offering businesses and marketers unprecedented opportunities to innovate and differentiate themselves in the marketplace. As NFC technology becomes more prevalent in our daily lives, the planned features have the potential to significantly enhance payment processes, brand engagement, device functionality, and sustainability efforts.

As Executive Director Mike McCamon aptly puts it, "The exponential growth of NFC technology is a testament to our members' forward-thinking approach and unwavering dedication to innovation." By continuously evolving standards and embracing new features, businesses and marketers will be able to create products and services that resonate with customers and drive tangible value.

While the roadmap spans two to five years, the individual initiatives are already underway, with varying degrees of development. Businesses and marketers are encouraged to participate in these efforts and contribute to shaping the future of NFC technology and start developing use cases now and pave the way for a future filled with frictionless commerce.
